California AG Calls Off Paramount-Warner Bros. Meeting, Accusing Company of “Playing Games”

What was supposed to be a pivotal step toward resolving one of Hollywood’s biggest legal battles ended in an abrupt cancellation on Monday. California Attorney General Rob Bonta called off a scheduled meeting with David Ellison’s Paramount Skydance just moments before it was set to begin, effectively stalling settlement talks regarding the state’s effort to block the massive acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. In a stinging public statement, Bonta accused the company of acting in bad faith, claiming that Paramount leaked and misrepresented the details of their private discussions.

The breakdown comes at a high-stakes moment for Ellison, who finds himself facing opposition from a coalition of twelve state attorneys general. These regulators argue that the mega-merger would stifle competition, leading to a legal standoff that could eventually force the sale of key Warner Bros. assets. The financial pressure is mounting quickly, as the deal faces potentially staggering ticking clock fees exceeding one billion dollars if it does not reach a resolution before its trial date in March.

Ellison has attempted to navigate this turbulence with an aggressive strategy involving a media blitz and provocative threats to move his operations out of California entirely. He even filed a motion suggesting that taxpayers should foot the bill for those looming fees if government delays keep blocking the path forward. This combative approach seems to have clashed directly with Bonta’s demand for sincerity, leaving the door open for future meetings only if Paramount stops playing games.

Adding another layer of complexity is Governor Gavin Newsom, who recently voiced his preference for seeing the dispute resolved outside of court. During a press event in San Francisco, Newsom noted that while there is likely a universal desire to settle things in the boardroom rather than the courtroom, everything depends on whether both parties can actually agree on what constitutes a fair landing point. For now, however, that landing remains far off as trust between the state and the studio continues to erode.
