Alibaba plunges after announcing $10.2 billion share placement to fund AI push

Shares of Alibaba tumbled as much as 10 percent in Hong Kong on Monday after the e-commerce titan revealed a massive plan to raise funds through a new share placement. The company is issuing 710 million new shares to non-U.S. investors, aiming to pull in roughly 80 billion Hong Kong dollars, or about 10.2 billion U.S. dollars. Because these shares were priced at 112.70 Hong Kong dollars per piece, significantly lower than Friday’s closing price of 123, investors reacted sharply, sending the stock sliding during Monday trading.

The aggressive fundraising drive is designed to fuel Alibaba’s ambitions in artificial intelligence. According to the company, every cent of the net proceeds will be poured into developing full-stack AI capabilities and upgrading its underlying technical infrastructure. This move follows a period of intense financial pressure; just days ago, Alibaba reported that its profits for the June quarter plummeted by 75 percent, largely because the cost of chasing AI dominance has become so expensive. Capital expenditures surged by 75 percent during that period alone, reaching nearly 68 billion yuan.

Despite the immediate hit to the stock price, some analysts believe this pain is necessary for long-term survival in a rapidly evolving market. Vey Sern Ling, a senior equity advisor at UBP, suggested recently that Alibaba remains uniquely positioned to win the AI race thanks to its powerful cloud computing division and existing AI models. While he acknowledged that short-term profits would likely suffer under the weight of rising costs, he views the strategic pivot as essential for future growth.

This spending spree isn’t happening in a vacuum, as other Chinese tech giants are locked in a similar arms race. Tencent has also seen its own capital expenditures spike by 65 percent as it builds out the computing power needed to monetize its own AI tools. For Alibaba, which previously pledged hundreds of billions of yuan toward cloud and AI projects over three years, today’s share plunge reflects a tense balancing act between satisfying shareholders and securing a lead in the next era of global technology.
