Eagles stock up, stock down after preseason game at Patriots

The Philadelphia Eagles may have walked away from Foxborough with a narrow 24-21 loss to the New England Patriots, but the final score was largely irrelevant for a coaching staff focused on evaluation. With the starters resting after an intense week of joint practices, Saturday night served as a high-stakes audition for the bubble players fighting for a spot on the final roster. While some managed to solidify their standing through sheer physicality, others found themselves sliding further down the depth chart.

On the positive side of the ledger, several young defenders and offensive linemen emerged as standout performers. Linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Jr. continued his impressive summer trend, recording five tackles and a sack while displaying a level of timing and pursuit that suggests he has genuine starter potential. In the trenches, rookie tackle Markel Bell dominated his matchups until a brief trip to the medical tent, while defensive tackle Ty Robinson looked like a transformed player following recent praise from Vic Fangio. The ground game also provided highlights, specifically from Will Shipley and Carson Steele, who combined for powerful runs and athletic hurdles to keep the chains moving.

Under center, the contrast between the backup quarterbacks was stark. Tanner McKee showed significant improvement over his previous outings, appearing decisive and rhythmic within the new offensive system. Meanwhile, veteran Andy Dalton struggled immensely, finishing with a dismal passer rating of 45.4 and completing only three of ten passes. Despite occasional sparks from receivers like Darius Cooper, Dalton’s inability to move the ball through the air raised questions about his current form compared to McKee’s upward trajectory.

Not everyone found success under the lights in Massachusetts. Cornerback Ambry Thomas suffered a costly series that included giving up a 69 yard touchdown pass, while wide receiver Quez Watkins struggled with consistency during key drives. Concerns also linger for tight end Eli Stowers and cornerback Mac McWilliams; both dealt with injuries or lack of production that leave them precarious as they approach the final cuts of training camp. As the Eagles prepare for their lone remaining preseason contest, these swings in momentum will likely dictate who makes the flight back home as part of the active roster.
