6 Panthers who improved their stock in preseason win over Jaguars

While preseason football is often dismissed as meaningless to the casual observer, for those fighting for a spot on the final roster, every snap can feel like a matter of survival. That urgency was on full display Friday night as the Carolina Panthers secured a convincing 34-17 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars at EverBank Stadium. While the win itself provides little weight in the standings, several players used the opportunity to make undeniable cases for their employment heading into Week 1.

The backfield saw significant action from both Trevor Etienne and AJ Dillon, though they offer very different profiles. Etienne impressed not only with his efficiency on the ground but also as a versatile weapon in the return game, while Dillon provided a bruising physical presence that few others on the squad possess, punctuating his night with a rushing touchdown. Meanwhile, the receiving corps saw flashes of brilliance from Jimmy Horn Jr., who showcased his speed on returns and big plays, and John Metchie III, who developed an immediate rapport with backup quarterback Kenny Pickett to lead all receivers with 77 yards.

Defensively, the spotlight shifted toward players stepping up in the wake of injuries. Outside linebacker Patrick Jones II looked sharp after a limited debut last season, recording a sack and proving he can handle increased responsibility following Nic Scourton’s ACL tear. In the secondary, cornerback Chau Smith-Wade experienced a rollercoaster evening; despite being burned early by Ameer Abdullah, he redeemed himself with an impressive interception that keeps him firmly in the hunt for starting slot duties over Corey Thornton. For these six men, a single night in Florida may have just saved their season.
