The ‘debasement trade’ returns after Bessent bond maneuver. Crypto and gold are back in style

Wall Street is seeing a resurgence of the debasement trade as investors grow increasingly anxious over the scale of the U.S. budget deficit and the rising cost of servicing national debt. This investment strategy centers on moving capital away from the U.S. dollar and Treasury bonds toward hard assets like gold and cryptocurrency, which serve as hedges against a weakening currency. Fear reached a boiling point following an unusual decision by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to increase debt buybacks, a move that many market participants viewed as a sign of instability rather than a solution.

While some argue that the actual volume of these buybacks is small compared to the broader market, analysts say the psychological impact has been profound. Gold recently touched three month highs after climbing for five consecutive weeks, marking one of its strongest periods since 1999. Bitcoin has seen similar momentum, surging toward the 80,000 dollar mark following a massive rally. Meanwhile, the U.S. dollar index has slid to three month lows as investors lose their appetite for the greenback in favor of alternative stores of value.

The turmoil comes at a precarious moment for American finances, with total federal debt topping 40 trillion dollars and July’s budget deficit hitting a five year peak. Long dated Treasury yields spiked recently, suggesting that bond investors believe current maneuvers are insufficient to stabilize the government’s financial health. Experts warn that while these policies might temporarily soothe the bond market, they risk fueling inflation and forcing the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates unexpectedly to compensate for a falling dollar.

Prominent figures in finance are urging caution and diversification during this period of volatility. Billionaire investor Ray Dalio has suggested remaining overweight in gold and bitcoin, warning that unchecked government spending has brought the nation’s financial condition to an inflection point that could lead to significant economic trauma if left unaddressed. While some skeptics believe it is too early to declare a full scale debasement trend without clearer signals from the Federal Reserve, others see this shift as an inevitable reaction to systemic fiscal imbalances and growing geopolitical tensions.
