Head of Local FBI talks of ‘massive increase’ in crypto scams in Central Texas

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is sounding an urgent alarm for residents across Central Texas as the region sees a sharp rise in cryptocurrency theft. In a recent conversation with KXAN morning anchor Sally Hernandez, the Special Agent in Charge of the local FBI branch described a massive growth in regional cases, noting that scammers are increasingly targeting people in these communities through sophisticated digital schemes.

This local surge mirrors a devastating national trend where cyber investment fraud has reached staggering proportions. According to federal data, reported losses from these types of scams have climbed to more than 11 billion dollars nationwide. These operations often lure victims with promises of guaranteed high returns on digital assets, only to vanish once the funds have been transferred into untraceable wallets.

Law enforcement officials warn that while the technology behind crypto can be complex, the psychology used by the criminals remains simple and predatory. By creating a sense of urgency or pretending to offer exclusive financial opportunities, fraudsters are able to trick even cautious investors into handing over their life savings. The FBI continues to urge locals to remain skeptical of unsolicited investment advice and to report any suspicious activity immediately to help track these evolving criminal networks.
