Do Republicans care about Trump’s multibillion-dollar family business conflicts?

For years, the Republican Party made a cornerstone of its political identity the aggressive pursuit of ethical lapses within the Biden family. Congressional committees spent countless hours dissecting Hunter Biden’s overseas business ties, focusing on millions of dollars in payments from Ukraine and China to argue that the Biden brand was being sold to the highest foreign bidder. It was a relentless campaign centered on the idea that any overlap between a president’s family finances and national policy is a fundamental threat to American integrity.

Now that Donald Trump has returned to the Oval Office, however, those concerns over conflicts of interest seem to have vanished from the GOP playbook. While Republicans once sounded alarms over modest sums involving Hunter Biden, they have remained largely silent as Trump’s own children oversee a massive surge in foreign capital. Recent reports indicate that Trump’s businesses saw revenues climb to 2.2 billion dollars in 2025 alone, fueled heavily by a new cryptocurrency venture that secured over 260 million dollars from an investor linked to United Arab Emirates royalty. From luxury developments in Saudi Arabia to high value gifts like a Boeing 747 from Qatar, the scale of these transactions dwarfs anything seen in previous administrations.

Critics and ethics experts suggest this creates a dangerous precedent where public policy may be influenced by private profit. Some point out that these windfalls have coincided with convenient diplomatic pivots, such as favorable chip exports to the Middle East or paused investigations into crypto billionaires. Richard Painter, a former White House ethics lawyer under George W. Bush, notes that while the Biden situation looked terrible, the current arrangement is exponentially larger and potentially more damaging to democratic norms. He warns that when families openly profit from the presidency on this scale, it fuels a cynical belief that government is inherently corrupt, which can eventually push voters toward authoritarianism.

Despite this volatility, partisan lines remain firmly drawn even as public opinion sours. Polls show that more than 60 percent of American adults now oppose these types of foreign business dealings involving sitting presidents. Yet, while Democrats have suddenly rediscovered their passion for ethical codification and oversight, House Republicans continue to look the other way. For many in the GOP, loyalty to their leader appears to outweigh the very standards they once demanded from their opponents across the aisle.
