Nvidia acquires open-source AI platform Hugging Face for $12.9bn

In a move that signals a massive consolidation within the artificial intelligence sector, chip giant Nvidia has announced the acquisition of the open source platform Hugging Face for 12.9 billion dollars. The financial structure of the deal involves roughly 11.9 billion dollars paid out to investors, with an additional billion dollars potentially earmarked for stock based retention incentives. This high stakes purchase comes at a time when several other tech titans, including Amazon, AMD, and Intel, already held investment stakes in the collaborative hub.

Despite the sheer size of the buyout, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has gone on record promising that Hugging Face will maintain its commitment to being an open source environment. In a recent blog post, Huang emphasized that developers will not be forced into using Nvidia hardware or proprietary software to access the platform. Instead, he argues that Nvidia’s immense global reach and engineering power will simply act as a catalyst to enhance reliability, safety, and deployment capabilities for users worldwide.

The decision to sell stems from a need for greater scale and visibility according to Clement Delangue, one of the French entrepreneurs who cofounded the company in New York back in 2016. Speaking with CNBC, Delangue explained that his team sought more resources to support their growth and viewed Nvidia as the ideal partner given that they were already the platform’s largest contributor. With hundreds of models and datasets already provided by Nvidia prior to the sale, the transition appears more like a formalization of an existing partnership than a sudden shift in direction.

Looking forward, Huang expressed his honor at becoming part of the next chapter for Hugging Face and its vast community of builders. By integrating these two forces, Nvidia aims to make advanced AI tools more accessible to both individuals and large institutions across the globe. For now, Hugging Face will retain its iconic branding as it moves onto what leadership describes as a much larger canvas for innovation_
