Hargreaves Lansdown offers crypto ETNs nearly a year after ban was lifted

Hargreaves Lansdown is finally opening its doors to cryptocurrency exchange traded notes, marking a significant shift in strategy for one of the UK’s largest investment platforms. The move comes nearly a year after regulatory restrictions were eased, allowing professional investors and certain retail clients back into the volatile world of digital assets via regulated instruments. By integrating these products, the firm is responding to sustained pressure from a client base that has long sought easier ways to gain exposure to Bitcoin and other tokens without leaving their primary brokerage accounts.

The decision reflects a broader trend among traditional financial institutions attempting to bridge the gap between legacy finance and the burgeoning crypto market. For months, many investors had been forced to navigate third party exchanges or complex offshore accounts to trade digital currencies, often facing security risks and cumbersome tax reporting requirements. By offering ETNs, Hargreaves Lansdown provides a streamlined alternative where users can track the price movements of cryptocurrencies through standard trading interfaces.

Industry analysts suggest that the timing of this rollout indicates a growing confidence in the institutionalization of crypto assets. While the volatility remains high, the availability of these products on mainstream platforms suggests that digital currency is being viewed less as a speculative fringe experiment and more as a legitimate asset class for diversification. This transition allows conservative portfolios to dip their toes into the sector while maintaining the oversight provided by an established platform.

Despite the new offerings, experts warn that these instruments still carry substantial risk compared to traditional equities or bonds. The company has emphasized that while accessibility has improved, it does not diminish the inherent instability of the underlying coins. As Hargreaves Lansdown rolls out these options, they join a growing list of wealth managers who believe that ignoring the demand for crypto is now a greater business risk than providing controlled access to it.
