Linebacker Kobie McKinzie pointed to rigorous practice repetitions as the reason for their success, while Robert Fitzgerald anchored the unit with a game high 14 tackles and Damon Walters provided a highlight reel interception in his first extended action since returning from injury.
However, the celebratory mood was briefly eclipsed by a frightening moment involving sixth year captain and center Jackson Carsello. The stadium fell silent for nearly fifteen minutes after Carsello was struck in the head and required a stretcher and neck brace to leave the field. In a display of resilience and leadership, Carsello gave his teammates and fans a thumbs up before being transported to the hospital. Coach Braun later confirmed that Carsello remained in good spirits and was able to move his extremities, providing some much needed relief following one of the scariest moments of the young season.
While there were plenty of positives, there are still clear areas for improvement as Northwestern prepares for September 19 against Colorado. Redshirt freshman punter Nikola Dugandzic struggled significantly with lakefront winds, averaging only 24 yards per punt across five attempts. Though Braun maintained unwavering confidence in Dugandzics long term talent, it served as a reminder that consistency remains key. Between those special teams hiccups and an inconsistent offensive tempo mid game, there is work to be done, but Chiles’ poised performance and a lockdown redzone defense give this squad plenty of momentum heading into their early bye week.
