Mexican cartel’s crypto farm seized in mountain raid — 300 GPUs, satellite links, and industrial transformers tapped hydroelectric power

Mexican authorities have dismantled another clandestine cryptocurrency operation tucked away in the rugged peaks of Puebla’s Sierra Norte region. During a coordinated raid in the town of Tlaola, federal agents, navy personnel, and state police uncovered a sophisticated setup featuring 300 high powered graphics processing units and an array of satellite antennas designed to keep the facility connected while remaining off the traditional grid. Investigators believe the operation avoided massive energy costs by illegally siphoning electricity directly from the nearby Presa de Necaxa hydroelectric dam via industrial transformers and medium voltage terminations.

This discovery marks the fourth similar farm unearthed in the region since early last year, signaling a strategic shift in how Mexican drug cartels manage their finances. Security analysts suggest that groups like the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion and the Sinaloa Cartel are moving beyond simple narcotics trafficking to embrace digital assets for laundering profits and funding further criminal enterprises. By establishing these mines in remote mountainous areas where they already hold significant territorial control, these organizations can exploit free energy and avoid detection while minting coins such as Bitcoin and Monero.

Despite attempts to stay hidden, the sheer scale of the hardware proved to be a liability. Residents from neighboring villages reported hearing the constant drone of cooling fans and humming transformers from over half a mile away, eventually drawing attention to the site just two kilometers from their community. This auditory footprint has become a recurring theme in recent busts near hydroelectric plants, where the intense power requirements of crypto mining clash with the silence of rural landscapes.

The trend reflects a broader global rise in illicit blockchain activity, with data showing a sharp increase in funds moved through cryptocurrency to evade sanctions or clean dirty money. Cybersecurity experts note that cryptomining as a laundry tool has surged significantly within Mexico over the past year. As organized crime becomes more technologically adept, officials warn that these hidden digital factories are becoming common fixtures across South America, mirroring similar trends seen in raids throughout Brazil, Thailand, and the United States.
