Hong Kong crypto exchange CoinEx to cease operations after 9 years in business

CoinEx, a mainstay of the Hong Kong cryptocurrency scene for nearly a decade, has announced it will officially shut down its operations on December 22. The date marks exactly nine years to the day since the platform first launched, bringing a poetic but abrupt end to its tenure in the digital asset space. Users have been instructed to withdraw all remaining funds before the deadline to avoid any complications as the exchange winds down.

Founder and CEO Haipo Yang attributed the decision to an increasingly hostile operational environment, noting that managing security and compliance risks has become overwhelmingly difficult. In a candid post on X, Yang admitted that while CoinEx failed to reach the top tier of industry leaders, he sought a dignified exit from the market. He revealed that although there were options to sell the company, he ultimately rejected those offers in favor of what he described as a clean ending.

The move comes at a time when smaller and mid sized exchanges are finding it harder to compete with global giants. With daily trading volumes hovering around 70 million dollars, CoinEx trailed far behind regional competitors like Gate and CoinW, which process billions in activity every twenty four hours. This gap highlights a growing divide between massive platforms and legacy players who struggle to attract consistent retail interest.

This closure is part of a larger pattern of consolidation within the crypto sector. Other veteran names such as BitMart and BitMEX also shuttered recently, victims of a sharp decline in retail spot trading volume as the market matures. As regulatory scrutiny tightens globally and user behavior shifts toward more dominant hubs, many early pioneers are discovering that longevity does not always guarantee survival in the volatile world of blockchain finance.
