SEC: Go ahead and trade stocks like they’re crypto

The American financial landscape is about to look a lot more like a digital currency exchange than a traditional brokerage house. In a surprising shift in policy, the Securities and Exchange Commission announced yesterday that it will temporarily permit blockchain based platforms to offer tokenized versions of U.S. stocks. This decision effectively opens the door for mainstream assets to be traded around the clock, mimicking the relentless twenty four seven nature of the cryptocurrency market.

For years, popular platforms such as Coinbase and Robinhood have offered these types of synthetic securities only to users outside the United States due to strict domestic regulations. These previous offerings often lacked actual ownership rights, but under a new five year exemption granted by the SEC, those limitations disappear. To qualify for this program, platforms must ensure that holders of tokenized stocks receive all the standard benefits of traditional shares, including dividend payments and voting privileges. Additionally, companies will be given a thirty day window to object if they do not want their stock tokenized, a safeguard that follows recent public disputes between corporate executives and trading apps over unauthorized tokens.

This regulatory pivot arrives at a curious moment for the industry, coming just two days after the crypto friendly Clarity Act stalled in the Senate. While some established Wall Street firms have expressed skepticism or outright opposition to the move toward tokenization, market data suggests that investors are already leaning into the trend regardless of institutional hesitation. According to figures from RWA.xyz, the number of tokenized stockholders globally has surged by one hundred sixty four percent in just the last month, signaling a massive appetite for digitizing equity.
