The Invisible Engine Powering Wall Street’s Digital Shift

Coinbase is positioning itself as the essential backbone for traditional financial institutions as the divide between legacy banking and digital assets continues to blur. Rather than competing directly with global banks, the exchange is leaning into its role as an infrastructure provider, offering the technical plumbing necessary for banks to launch their own cryptocurrency services. Liz Martin, who leads Coinbase Institutional, recently told Bloomberg that prime brokerage has become one of the company’s fastest growing sectors, driven by a surge in appetite from firms looking to integrate custody, trading financing, and settlement into their operations.

This strategic pivot comes as major players like BNY, DBS Bank, and U.S. Bank establish crypto custody services, while others like Deutsche Bank signal their intent to enter the fray. While some might see a conflict of interest in Coinbase acting as both a trader and a service provider for these banks, Martin argues that both roles are fueled by the same momentum toward putting more financial services on chain. This symbiotic relationship allows Coinbase to scale alongside the very institutions that were once viewed as rivals to the decentralized movement.

The expansion extends beyond backend infrastructure into high profile consumer integrations. In a significant move for mainstream accessibility, Coinbase will now handle the custody of USDC stablecoin balances within Samsung Wallet through its Prime platform. With USDC set to become the default dollar stablecoin for Samsung’s payment service in the United States later this month, Coinbase is effectively embedding its technology into millions of handheld devices worldwide. This follows another massive leap forward with the finalization of Deribit’s integration, following a nearly three billion dollar acquisition intended to unify global liquidity pools for derivatives trading.

However, this institutional enthusiasm does not yet translate perfectly across every sector of the economy. Despite the polished pipes provided by Coinbase and similar firms, actual corporate usage remains surprisingly stagnant. Recent research from the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland suggests that many businesses are simply content with current payment systems and feel little pressure from clients or vendors to switch to stablecoins. It appears that while Wall Street is racing to build the machinery for a crypto future, mid sized corporations remain cautiously curious rather than fully committed to changing how they settle their bills.
