Mansion Dreams and Digital Lies: Inside the Fall of the Crypto King

What began as a friendship forged on a baseball field ended in a Toronto courtroom as Mitchell Learning recounted the harrowing moment he discovered his investments had vanished. For years, Aiden Pleterski lived the life of a high roller, branding himself the Crypto King while flaunting McLarens and Range Rovers on Instagram. Lured in by this image of effortless wealth, Learning initially invested small sums that eventually grew into four hundred thousand dollars. At first, the returns seemed real, with Learning claiming he withdrew over a million dollars early on, which further cemented his trust in Pleterski’s purported trading genius.

The illusion shattered in June 2022 when Learning visited Pleterski’s opulent lakefront mansion in Burlington to verify the existence of an investment account that supposedly held three hundred eleven million dollars. While Pleterski was away from home, Learning accessed a computer and found a devastating confirmation from a trading platform stating that the account had been successfully deleted. As other friends joined him in the house to sift through remaining digital records, they found accounts containing mere hundreds of dollars rather than millions. The realization hit hard; the staggering wealth displayed to the world was nothing more than a facade.

When confronted, Pleterski allegedly admitted that his fortunes had plummeted in late 2021, leading him to gamble desperately to recover losses before pivoting into what sounded like a classic Ponzi scheme. A recorded phone call played during the trial captured a raw exchange between the two men, with Learning accusing Pleterski of using him as a front for a massive lie. On the tape, Pleterski expressed regret for not being honest once his trades went south and promised to make things right for those he had defrauded.

While Pleterski has pleaded not guilty to charges of money laundering and fraud over five thousand dollars, prosecutors paint a different picture of where the money actually went. The Crown alleges that instead of trading assets for his clients, Pleterski funneled investor funds into an extravagant lifestyle defined by private jets and luxury shopping sprees. As the trial continues, former associates like Learning serve as witnesses to a collapse fueled by greed and carefully curated social media posts.
