Residents Clash Over High Tech Pivot at Former Crypto Site

Tensions are mounting in Yates County as residents gather Tuesday evening at Seneca Stag Brewing to voice their opposition to a plan transforming a former cryptomining plant into an artificial intelligence data center. The facility, located in the Village of Dresden and operated by Greenidge Generation, intends to pivot toward high performance computing under the new banner of Vulcan Infrastructure and Power. While leadership describes the shift as a logical evolution of computing power, local neighbors see it as a continuation of several years of industrial headaches.

For many living nearby, the primary concern is the sensory toll of the massive operation. Local resident Leah Murray described the persistent sound emanating from the site as akin to a large idling truck or train that never stops. She expressed fear that while some villagers are aware of the disruption, farmers and families in the wider Town of Torrey remain in the dark about how much noise pollution accompanies these facilities. This frustration has led to growing demands for the Torrey Town Board to implement a moratorium on new data centers until officials can fully grasp the implications of such a transition.

Beyond the noise, environmental advocates are calling for rigorous transparency regarding resource consumption. Bill Roege, president of the Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association, noted that while his organization isn’t flatly opposing the project yet, they are demanding comprehensive studies on energy requirements and cooling systems. There are significant questions about whether the existing electrical infrastructure can handle an increase toward 200 megawatts and how such upgrades might disturb local wildlife through low frequency vibrations.

Adding to the uncertainty is the business model behind Vulcan Infrastructure and Power, which essentially creates a powered shell intended for lease by tech giants like Google or Microsoft. Because these corporate tenants would operate internally, locals worry that accountability will vanish once a global conglomerate takes over. As members of the community push for more oversight, they hope state regulators and town boards will prioritize ecological health and quality of life over rapid technological expansion on the shores of Seneca Lake.
