Safety Over Solvency: Anthropic Tests New Hires With Hypothetical Financial Ruin

Anthropic is preparing for a massive leap into the public market with a targeted November IPO that could value the company between 1.5 trillion and 2 trillion dollars. Such a debut would likely shatter records, potentially surpassing even SpaceX’s historic trajectory and creating an entire generation of overnight millionaires among its workforce of 2,500 employees. But while the financial upside is staggering, leadership seems worried that these lifechanging sums might distract from the company’s core mission of artificial intelligence safety.

To filter for true believers, the firm has reportedly introduced a provocative question during culture interviews. Candidates are asked how they would react if Anthropic decided to abandon its AI ambitions entirely for safety reasons, causing the company’s stock price to plummet to zero. It is a stark litmus test designed to ensure that recruits are motivated by the long term benefit of humanity rather than just a payday. One candidate shared on the platform Blind that they were honest about their disappointment at the prospect of losing their investment, though they still hoped to balance ethics with a sustainable business model.

This internal tension exists against a backdrop of extreme competition for technical talent. While CEO Dario Amodei expresses concern over wealth concentration and insists that mission must come first, the company is simultaneously paying eye watering base salaries to stay competitive against giants like Google and Meta. Software engineering roles are seeing offers range from 350,000 to 850,000 dollars annually. The demand is so high that some hopefuls are paying thousands of dollars for private coaching just to navigate the grueling hiring process and secure these lucrative positions.

For Amodei himself, whose net worth is already estimated at over 13 billion dollars, the rise of AI wealth carries a systemic risk. He has previously warned that extreme concentrations of capital could eventually break society, leading him and his cofounders to pledge eighty percent of their personal fortunes to philanthropic causes. By questioning whether new hires can stomach total financial loss in exchange for global safety, Anthropic is attempting to build a corporate culture where ideological commitment outweighs the allure of becoming an ultra high net worth individual.
