Chris Larsen, the billionaire co-founder of Ripple Labs, is leveraging his massive fortune to reshape the American political landscape during this year’s midterm elections. Having poured at least 22.5 million dollars into federal candidates and super PACs, Larsen has emerged as a prominent left leaning counterweight to high profile tech donors like Elon Musk and Marc Andreessen. While he openly admits that there is far too much money in politics and views the legacy of Citizens United as a major error, Larsen insists that playing the financial game is necessary to combat the influence of oil companies and opposing interests.

Beyond general partisan battles, Larsen is focusing his resources on what he calls problem solvers who prioritize tangible issues such as housing, education, and clean energy. His strategy involves attempting to broaden the appeal of renewable energy beyond traditional Democratic circles by framing it through the lens of economic competitiveness. To this end, he recently contributed 6 million dollars to the Tomorrow Coalition PAC to push for sustainable power solutions while urging both sides of the aisle to move past mutual vilification in favor of practical progress.

Perhaps most striking is Larsen’s aggressive stance against the current trajectory of artificial intelligence. Despite holding indirect stakes in firms like OpenAI and Anthropic, he describes the current state of AI development as an out of control arms race lacking any meaningful brakes or steering. In a series of blunt warnings, he has called for government intervention so severe that it would include shutting down data centers until strict regulations are established to protect jobs and public safety.

However, these convictions have met stiff resistance from other Silicon Valley titans. Larsen’s attempt to back New York Assemblymember Alex Bores, a proponent of AI safety laws, ended in a narrow defeat after significant spending by OpenAI leadership and Andreessen Horowitz worked to sink the candidate’s campaign. Reflecting on the loss, Larsen acknowledged that even tens of millions in funding cannot always guarantee victory when facing an equally wealthy opposition determined to keep the regulatory gates open.
