Coinbase CEO says CLARITY Act will protect crypto users from another FTX collapse

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong is championing a new bipartisan legislative effort designed to bring order to the volatile world of digital assets. Speaking with CBS News, Armstrong argued that the proposed CLARITY Act would provide essential consumer protections and ensure that the catastrophic collapse of platforms like FTX becomes a thing of the past. He noted that many ordinary Americans have suffered due to a lack of clear rules, leaving the industry to operate in a legal gray area for too long.

Scheduled for a Senate vote in September, the act seeks to establish a formal regulatory framework where the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission share oversight responsibilities. Beyond just safety guardrails, Armstrong suggests the bill would empower law enforcement to crack down on illegal activities while opening doors for new financial products, such as stablecoin reward systems and streamlined ways for companies to raise capital through crypto securities. This push comes amid positive market momentum, with both bitcoin and ethereum seeing gains during recent trading sessions.

The legislation arrives amidst significant political maneuvering, following a meeting between Armstrong and President Trump at the White House. While Trump framed the bill as a strategic move to keep the United States competitive against global rivals like China, critics have raised concerns over potential conflicts of interest. These worries stem from the fact that members of the Trump family are expanding their own cryptocurrency ventures, including efforts by his sons to secure banking charters via World Liberty Financial.

In response to these criticisms, Armstrong highlighted specific ethics provisions within the bill that he claims are unprecedented for executive branch requirements. However, those objections remain loud, particularly from Senator Elizabeth Warren. The Massachusetts Democrat has dismissed these safeguards as insufficient, arguing that the legislation fails to stop political figures from profiting immensely from their own influence over the evolving crypto landscape.
