Crypto Money Still Matters for the Midterms

The cryptocurrency industry has long lived in a world of extremes, swinging wildly between euphoric bull markets and punishing winters. While current trends show Bitcoin sitting well below its previous peaks and public fascination shifting toward the rapid rise of artificial intelligence, the sector is far from dormant. Despite a decline in mainstream hype, digital currencies still maintain a massive collective value of over 2.7 trillion dollars, and that wealth is being strategically deployed to ensure the industry remains influential in the halls of government.

Recent data reveals that crypto firms have poured 206 million dollars into this year’s midterm elections, outspending every other corporate sector, including the booming AI industry. Much of this influence flows through Fairshake, a powerhouse super PAC known for backing winning candidates regardless of party affiliation. With a formidable war chest and a track record showing that over ninety percent of its endorsed candidates have secured victory, Fairshake has become a force that even seasoned political leaders are hesitant to cross. From heavy spending in Alabama’s Senate races to targeted efforts in Maryland’s House contests, the industry is proving that financial muscle can outweigh low public approval ratings.

Interestingly, while the money continues to flow, the American public seems largely indifferent or quietly skeptical. Many voters remain distrustful of crypto following the spectacular collapse of FTX and the subsequent fraud trials involving figures like Sam Bankman-Fried. However, that anger has mostly migrated toward newer tech grievances, such as the proliferation of invasive surveillance cameras and the environmental impact of massive AI data centers. This shift in focus has provided a convenient shield for crypto lobbyists; while some candidates try to weaponize pro-crypto funding as a liability on the campaign trail, there hasn’t been a broad grassroots movement to purge the industry from politics.

Ultimately, cryptocurrency is transitioning from a flashy speculative bubble into something more mundane yet deeply embedded in the system. It exists now in partnership with traditional financial institutions and integrated payment apps rather than just volatile trading screens. By securing friendly legislation through aggressive campaign spending while public attention is diverted elsewhere, the industry is ensuring that even if it no longer dominates the daily headlines, it will continue to hold significant leverage over whoever wins at the ballot box.
