Digital Traps in Gas Stations Spark Federal Probe Into Crypto Kiosks

A woman in Johnston County discovered the devastating speed of digital theft when her entire life savings vanished in a matter of seconds. Believing she was speaking with law enforcement officers who demanded payment for her safe release, she followed their instructions to a cryptocurrency ATM located inside a local gas station. The nightmare only ended when the scammers asked for another four thousand dollars; unable to pay, she watched as the line went dead, leaving her financially ruined and emotionally shattered.

This tragedy is part of a growing national trend where criminals leverage the anonymity and speed of crypto kiosks to fleece vulnerable people. These machines, which often look like standard ATMs, allow users to trade cash for digital assets almost instantly, making the funds nearly impossible to recover once sent. Recent data from the FBI highlights a staggering surge in these crimes, with reported losses jumping from roughly 189 million dollars in 2023 to 389 million dollars by 2025.

In response to the crisis, North Carolina has moved toward stricter oversight via House Bill 920. The new legislation introduces licensing requirements for operators and mandates fraud warnings on screens. Perhaps most importantly, it sets strict transaction caps for new users and requires refunds if fraud is reported within thirty days. While some industry representatives argue that only a small fraction of transactions are fraudulent, state officials remain skeptical about the utility of these machines entirely.

Attorney General Jeff Jackson has questioned why these kiosks exist in public spaces at all, noting that anyone wishing to invest in cryptocurrency can do so through secure platforms without visiting a gas station. He revealed that the Department of Justice is currently conducting investigations into cryptocurrency kiosk companies to determine their role in facilitating these scams. For victims like the woman in Johnston County, however, the legal battles and legislative changes come too late to restore what was lost in a few clicks of a screen.
