McDonald’s to spend $8.5B on revamping restaurants, tech and franchise support

McDonald’s is placing a massive bet on the future of fast food with a sweeping investment plan designed to modernize its global footprint. During a recent investor event at its Chicago headquarters, the company unveiled the specifics of its NEXT growth and productivity strategy, pledging approximately 8.5 billion dollars in support for franchisees through 2036. A significant portion of this funding, roughly 5 billion dollars, will be deployed by 2030 in the form of capital support and rent relief to help owners upgrade their facilities and integrate new technologies.

The overhaul focuses heavily on blending physical renovations with high tech solutions. Beyond just refreshing the look of its dining rooms, McDonald’s intends to lean into artificial intelligence by scaling ArchIQ, a generative AI tool meant to streamline how restaurants operate. The goal is to simplify daily tasks and elevate overall execution, which the company believes will lead to substantial financial gains for local operators. Specifically, McDonald’s expects these efficiency improvements to add around 100,000 dollars in annual cash flow back into the average restaurant’s bottom line.

Improving the human element of the experience is also a priority under this new roadmap. Starting October 5 on Founder’s Day, the chain will launch Make it Golden, a multiyear training initiative aimed at sharpening customer service skills and ensuring a more consistent experience across all locations. By focusing on better hospitality, executives hope to drive higher rates of repeat visits from customers who may have drifted away during periods of inconsistent service quality.

CEO Chris Kempczinski emphasized that these moves are about turning industry shifts into competitive advantages rather than simply reacting to them. Along with technical upgrades, the company set ambitious market share goals for 2030, specifically targeting growth in chicken and beverage categories while defending its dominant position in beef. Through combined efforts in site expansion and operational refinement, McDonald’s aims to solidify itself as the primary choice for consumers while making its business model more sustainable for those running the stores.
