South Korean President Lee pushes back on Alaska LNG project after Trump touts Seoul’s participation

A diplomatic rift has emerged between Washington and Seoul following conflicting claims regarding a massive energy investment package intended to bolster ties between the United States and South Korea. While President Donald Trump took to social media to announce that the two nations had agreed to move forward with the ambitious Alaska LNG project, valuing it at 50 billion dollars, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung quickly tempered those expectations. In a public response, President Lee clarified that any participation in the Alaskan venture remains strictly dependent on its financial viability and legal compliance, signaling that the deal is far from finalized.

The tension highlights a disconnect between political rhetoric and economic reality. The Alaska LNG project aims to transport natural gas over 1,300 kilometers from the North Slope to southern Alaska for export to Asian markets, but it has long been plagued by doubts over its profitability due to staggering upfront costs. This cautious stance aligns with previous warnings from South Korea’s Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan, who labeled the endeavor high risk last year and noted that participation would be nearly impossible without guaranteed cash flow. Even the official joint statement released by both governments remained vague, mentioning only that progress was contingent on commercial reasonableness rather than confirming a firm commitment.

Despite the disagreement over Alaska, other portions of the broader 200 billion dollar investment framework appear more concrete. A significant portion of the funding is directed toward a 22.3 billion dollar natural gas power facility in Encinal, Texas, designed to fuel nearby data centers with operations slated to begin by 2029. Additionally, there are expansive plans for eight large scale nuclear reactors involving a 120 billion dollar allocation shared among government agencies and industry giants like Westinghouse and Korea Electric Power Corp.

President Trump continues to champion these initiatives as transformative milestones that will create tens of thousands of American jobs through new construction and manufacturing. However, President Lee’s insistence on assessing projects on a plant by plant basis suggests that Seoul will not sign blank checks for geopolitical goodwill. As both leaders navigate these complex negotiations, the future of the Alaska pipeline remains uncertain, caught between an American desire for rapid industrial growth and a Korean requirement for fiscal prudence.
