The Trump family is poised to own a crypto bank as regulators sound the alarm

In a move that has sent shockwaves through Washington, Treasury Department regulators have granted conditional approval for World Liberty Financial, a cryptocurrency venture linked to the Trump family, to operate as a federally chartered trust bank. This shift grants the enterprise significant new powers and federal credibility, allowing it to issue and safeguard its own dollar-backed stablecoin known as USD1. Until now, the firm had relied on third-party services from BitGo to manage the asset, but this new status enables them to cut out the middleman entirely.

The development is being described as historic and highly unusual, marking the first time in United States history that a business owned by the immediate family of a sitting president has been granted banking status. While World Liberty will not be permitted to accept traditional deposits or issue loans, experts note that it creates an awkward regulatory dynamic. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency is now tasked with policing an entity closely affiliated with the very administration that oversees it.

Critics and ethics watchdogs are sounding alarms over what they describe as a massive conflict of interest. Opponents argue that this arrangement essentially allows the fox to guard the henhouse, suggesting that corporations or foreign entities could use the bank as a discreet channel to gain favor with the White House. Senator Elizabeth Warren has been among the most vocal detractors, calling the move a brazen act of self-dealing and asserting that no president should be allowed to approve and supervise their own financial institution.

In response to these concerns, a group of Democratic senators has introduced legislation called the Ending Presidential Corruption in Banking Act. The proposed law aims to prevent high-ranking government officials and their families from owning or controlling banks while in office to stop potential abuses of power. As political tensions rise, there are indications that lawmakers intend to launch formal probes into how the charter was approved should leadership in Congress shift in the coming year.
