Trump threatens to block Canada’s Bombardier sales unless planes made in US

President Donald Trump has escalated his ongoing trade conflict with Canada by threatening to ban the sale of Bombardier aircraft within the United States unless the aerospace giant moves its manufacturing operations across the border. In a blunt social media post on Monday, the president accused Canada of treating the U.S. market like a piggybank and claimed that Bombardier’s products were simply not good enough to merit continued access without local production. This ultimatum marks yet another flashpoint in an increasingly volatile relationship between two historic allies who are currently locked in a cycle of tariffs and retaliation.

The dispute centers on accusations of unfair trade practices, with Trump arguing that it is unjust for a company to derive over half of its revenue from American buyers, airports, and service providers while operating primarily outside the country. He specifically cited frustrations over how U.S. banks and corporations are treated in Canada, claiming that rivals such as Gulfstream Aerospace have been unfairly blocked from doing business there. For Trump, requiring domestic assembly is the only way to ensure reciprocity and protect American industrial interests.

These threats place significant pressure on major aviation clients, most notably NetJets based in Columbus, Ohio. As one of Bombardier’s primary customers, NetJets recently entered into a massive agreement to purchase dozens of Challenger 3500 jets, a deal that could be thrown into chaos if import bans or heavy tariffs are implemented. This follows a pattern of aggression toward the manufacturer seen earlier this year when shares plummeted following threats to decertify certain plane models and impose fifty percent import duties.

The timing of these remarks coincides with a broader deterioration in diplomatic ties as both nations prepare for more aggressive economic measures. With Canada preparing to launch retaliatory tariffs covering roughly twenty billion dollars worth of American goods starting Tuesday, the atmosphere remains tense despite calls from figures like Mark Carney for a mutually beneficial resolution. While Canadian officials suggest they remain open to a fair deal, bombardier has remained silent regarding the latest threat from the White House.
