Nasdaq invests $100 million in Kraken parent, eyeing 2027 launch of ‘tokenized’ stock trading

Nasdaq is making a massive bet on the future of finance by injecting 100 million dollars into Payward, the parent company of cryptocurrency exchange Kraken. This strategic investment aims to bridge the gap between traditional Wall Street trading and blockchain technology, with the two firms planning to launch tokenized equity trading by the second quarter of 2027. By creating digital representations of publicly traded securities on a blockchain, Nasdaq hopes to streamline how capital moves through the global financial system, potentially enabling faster settlements and allowing markets to operate twenty four hours a day.

As part of the agreement, Payward will integrate Nasdaq’s sophisticated market surveillance technology across its various trading platforms. This move signals Kraken’s ambition to evolve from a pure cryptocurrency exchange into a comprehensive multi asset platform that handles stocks, derivatives, and other conventional financial instruments. According to reports from Bloomberg, this fresh infusion of capital pushes Payward’s total valuation up to 21 billion dollars as it positions itself as a primary piece of infrastructure for the next generation of investing.

However, the shift toward tokenization is not without controversy regarding legal ownership and investor rights. Unlike owning a share directly, holders of these tokenized assets do not possess outright ownership of the underlying security. This distinction has already sparked tension elsewhere in the industry, highlighted by recent clashes between Robinhood and AMC over synthetic tokens that track stock prices without providing actual shareholder voting rights. Despite these debates, Nasdaq leadership maintains that this evolution is necessary for long term liquidity and connectivity in an increasingly digital economy.
