Ford announces $1 billion investment at Kentucky plant following DOT criticism on China

Ford Motor Company announced a massive one billion dollar investment on Thursday to construct a brand new paint shop at its Kentucky Truck Plant, marking a significant upgrade to what the automaker considers its most profitable facility worldwide. This specific plant serves as the production hub for some of Ford’s heaviest hitters, including the F-250 through F-550 Super Duty trucks along with the Lincoln Navigator and Ford Expedition SUVs. The project aims to modernize existing infrastructure and replaces an aging paint operation, with groundbreaking scheduled for later this year.

The timing of the announcement is particularly striking, coming just two days after Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy voiced profound concerns regarding Ford’s manufacturing integrity. In a letter sent to CEO Jim Farley, Duffy questioned the company’s ties to Chinese firms, suggesting such relationships could jeopardize both the carmaker and the broader domestic automotive industry under current administration priorities. While Ford initially dismissed these criticisms as nothing more than a wrongheaded attempt to grab headlines, the sudden capital injection into Kentucky seems designed to signal a firm pivot toward domestic stability.

This latest move follows a series of diplomatic maneuvers between Detroit and Washington. After Ford provided a detailed response to Secretary Duffy’s grievances, the mood shifted quickly when the White House Rapid Response account praised Ford as a great American company on social media Wednesday. By putting another billion dollars into US soil—adding to roughly four billion already pledged for Kentucky sites in recent years—Ford appears to be aggressively reinforcing its image as a patriotically rooted manufacturer.

CEO Jim Farley emphasized that these expenditures reflect deep confidence in the local workforce and a steadfast commitment to building the future of mobility within the United States. While spokespeople have yet to provide a definitive timeline for when the new paint shop will be fully operational, the strategic message is clear: Ford intends to keep its most vital operations firmly planted on American ground amidst growing geopolitical tensions over global supply chains.
