Crypto CEO Chris Larsen Donates $500,000 to Support Political Moderate in Supervisors Race

Chris Larsen, the founder of cryptocurrency giant Ripple Labs, has shaken up a San Francisco supervisory race by pouring a record breaking 500,000 dollars into the campaign of moderate Democrat Theo Ellington. According to recent finance filings, the contribution was funneled through a newly established political action committee titled From the Neighborhood, For the City. This move marks one of the largest financial interventions by a third party for a single candidate in city history, effectively bypassing strict individual donor limits that cap direct contributions at just 500 dollars.

Ellington, an executive director and lobbyist, is seeking to replace outgoing progressive supervisor Shamann Walton in District 10 this November. The outcome of this specific contest is viewed as critical for Mayor Daniel Lurie, who needs to maintain a moderate majority on the board to push forward his legislative agenda and policy proposals. With this massive infusion of cash, Ellington now holds a commanding lead in fundraising over his opponents, J.R. Eppler and Dion Jay Brookter, whose coffers pale in comparison to the crypto billionaire’s investment.

The scale of the donation has sparked immediate backlash from critics and academic observers alike. Opponent J.R. Eppler argued that residents deserve to choose their leaders without the interference of record breaking outside money, suggesting that such large sums are investments rather than gifts. Meanwhile, Menlo College professor Melissa Michelson warned that these kinds of disproportionate spends can create undue influence, particularly in low information local races where visibility and advertising often dictate victory more than platform details.

Larsen is no stranger to playing kingmaker in San Francisco politics, having already spent millions supporting Mayor Lurie’s broader goals regarding policing and charter reform earlier this year. As big tech wealth continues to flood into municipal contests, some experts suggest this trend reflects a strategic hedge by billionaires looking to secure friendly governance at the local level. While money does not guarantee a win every time, those watching the race note that it provides an overwhelming advantage in reaching voters across Bayview and Potrero Hill before November arrives.
