Exclusive: Senate Republicans weigh whether to keep investing in North Carolina and Georgia races

Republican strategists are facing a stressful crossroads as they determine how to allocate their remaining funds in a desperate bid to maintain control of the Senate. Once considered reliable pillars of the GOP majority, North Carolina and Georgia are now becoming sources of intense debate within the party. Some lawmakers argue that continuing to pour millions into these states is a waste of precious resources, suggesting instead that the party shift its focus toward more promising opportunities in places like Michigan and New Hampshire or protect vulnerable incumbents in Alaska and Ohio.

The tension stems from a cold calculation regarding probabilities. One Republican senator described the current landscape as a zero sum game, noting that Georgia and North Carolina have consistently shown their candidates trailing in the polls. With Donald Trump’s low approval ratings creating headwinds for candidates nationwide, some members of the caucus worry that chasing unlikely victories in the South could leave them exposed in other critical states. Senator Kevin Cramer emphasized this risk, arguing it would be catastrophic to lose a seat in Alaska simply because resources were tied up in failing campaigns elsewhere.

Despite these concerns, leadership remains hesitant to officially wave the white flag. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has pushed back against the idea of abandoning these races entirely, insisting there is still game left to play and pledging his own travel support for Representative Mike Collins in Georgia. While acknowledging that both states represent difficult margin of error battles, Thune maintains that any final decision on funding will be guided solely by what is necessary to preserve the overall majority.

However, seasoned veterans within the party are sounding alarms about the viability of these contests. Former NRSC chair Senator John Cornyn suggested that Georgia may already be nearly lost and that North Carolina isn’t far behind, warning that polling numbers eventually become baked in. As election day approaches and with the House appearing increasingly likely to flip to Democrats, the pressure on groups like the National Republican Senatorial Committee and the Senate Leadership Fund has reached a fever pitch. They must now decide if they will double down on hope or pivot toward survival.
